What Type of Damage Could Happen if You Floss Too Much?

What Type of Damage Could Happen if You Floss Too Much?Flossing between your teeth is a great way to reduce bacterial growth in your mouth. In addition to brushing, flossing should be a daily part of your oral hygiene program. However, it is possible to damage your teeth and gums if you floss too much.

Problems With Flossing Too Much

We see several common problems from our patients who floss too much. First, if you floss too frequently, you can cause irritation to the gums. The repeated irritation from the floss is not good for your gums. If the gums are inflamed, they can get red and swollen and even infected. Make sure you floss slowly and are gentle with your gums when you floss. Additionally, we advise our patients to floss either in the morning or the evening to avoid exacerbating their gums while they floss. Once a day is enough to clean your teeth well.

Also, if you aggressively brush and floss you can damage your enamel. The enamel on your teeth is your only protective coating for your tooth. Brush and floss gently, just enough to remove plaque from the surface of your teeth.

Make an Appointment And we Will Help You Learn to Floss Properly

Bacteria grows on all sides of your teeth. It is important to both brush and floss to remove all the bacteria that you can on a daily basis. Even so, it is impossible to remove all the bacteria, and over time tartar does form on your teeth. Come see our friendly dental hygienists who have the upper hand on tartar. We can also show you the best way to brush and floss your teeth. We look forward to working with you to be proactive at home in the fight against tooth decay.
